Outstanding In Her Field!

Wild Rose Farm #142 With Twin Ram Lambs!
Here's a quick picture taken around 10AM with my cell phone while I was out standing in the pasture field. I was checking on first time lamber #142, when I got a call from a potential alpaca vendor for the Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest.  We chatted as I watched the ewe and her lambs. Then I decided, "hey, I've got this camera, let's take a pic", so I worked my way down closer to check as she cleaned her newborns.  About an hour later, the lambs were moved up to the barn and #142 followed along very well.
And so did Snow White ... once she saw the lambs being carried, ever curious, she followed along into the barn.  She sniffed around checking out the lambing pen set ups and then ambled back out the door.

In Other News ...

Dusk Cell Phone Pic Of Nothing Happening!
We moved the ewes last night so that they are now grazing close to the barn. The waiting continues at Wild Rose Farm ... nothing as of this morning.
Yesterday our Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Festival committee had our "walk-thru" meeting at the fairgrounds. Building #8 has been renovated & expanded, so that called for me to whip out the 100' tape measure and get updated dimensions. Next comes a new booth layout map ... the fun never ends!
Lena With Felted Flower Purse From 2015 WS&FF
The building looks so empty without the vendors, but Lena from Lippencott Alpacas decided to show off a felted flower purse that she got last year from long time returning vendor River Ridge Fiberworks. That's the 2016 festival t-shirt tucked under her arm ... sneak preview below:

Here is a wonderful fleece from Rambouillet #329.  It is destined for Paula at the Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest this weekend.  Just look at the crimp!  Coincidently, #329 had a set of twins yesterday with one ewe lamb to hopefully carry on the tradition ...

Meeting Another Yarn Farm!

Underhill Farm At The Sewickley Farmers' Market
Wow - the colors in the picture are just great!  We visited the Sewickley Farmers' Market for the first time this summer ....... embarassing for this farmers' market fan, but the local Ambridge/Aliquippa Bridge has been closed for repairs since March.   Boy, are we glad we went.  We met Underhill Farm and got a chance to handle their yarns.  They have Leicester Longwool sheep & Angora goats.  What a great combination for their luster artisan yarns!
Underhill Yarn Colors Close-Up!
They said that the natural yarns are more popular in the spring, but that they start dyeing in the summer for the fall season.  Seems many folks love the rich colors in the fall.  I promised to keep in touch for the Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Festival next spring & maybe schedules will mesh!
Check out their web-site for upcoming locations to buy their yarn ..........

Fleeces For Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Festival

WRF Rambouillet #329 - Crimpy Rambouillet Fleece
I'll be heading down to Waynesburg tomorrow to get the vendor booths measured & taped off for the festival on Saturday & Sunday.  Vendor set up is from 4 to 8 PM on Friday and 7 to 9:45 AM on Saturday.  It looks like the weather will cooperate with maybe a few showers Saturday afternoon.
The ever popular WRF Ewe #329 sheared another great crimpy fleece this year & it will be for sale.
She is out of our old Schafer ram from Colorado.
Another Rambouillet fleece below is coming to the festival from WRF Ewe #415.  She is a daughter of our performance tested New York ram.   We always like to bring several fleeces for the handspinners who come to the festival ..... some folks just like to process the fleece themselves all the way through spinning & dyeing the yarn, & knitting the garment!

Wild Rose Farm Out To Pasture

Wild Rose Farm Portrait - #34 Dot Ewe Lamb
We gave our 2nd batch of lambs their booster shots today and then turned them out to pasture with the 1st group.  Here's one of the twins from x-bred #34 - we tag the ewe lambs in the left ear & tag the ram lambs in the right ear.  If she stays in the flock, she'll get her permanent flock tag in her right ear.  Her paint number looks like it's camo in this shot! :)

Wild Rose Farm Rambouillet #415 With Twins
For the Rambouillet watchers in the crowd, here's # 415 with her twins - one of each.  The weather was warm today - it got up to about 80 degrees .......
Tomorrow, is "fleece day".  I'll be skirting fleeces for the Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Festival/ and I'll put up some pictures!   Hopefully the weather will be nice for the weekend.

2013 Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest Is Coming!

2012 Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Festival Shoppers!
Well, sheep & fiber friends, it's time to start thinking about our 10th Anniversary Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Festival!  This year it will be held on May 18th & 19th at  the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg, PA.  We have a great variety of over 40 juried vendors signed up so far this year.   There is still time to enter the photography contest and the fiber arts contest - check the WS&FF web-site for applications.
Here are a few more pictures from 2012 to get everyone in mood!  As usual, there will be chef demos, lamb recipe sampling, sheep shearing demos, the Breed Pavillion, and kids activities.  A recent feature story in Lancaster Farming by Laura Zoeller provides a nice background on the festival & how it got started.

Back To The Ranch!

Wild Rose Farm #50 - Twin Ewe Lambs!
We've been talking about the Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest, but meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Wild Rose Farm lambs are running around on pasture.  These 2 lambs out of our wonderful x-bred ewe, WRF #50,are both ewe lambs ...... note the tags in the left ear.  The ewe lambs will get their flock tag number in their right ear once they're big enough.
Ewes Grazing & Lambs
We're having a couple of groups over on Saturday.  We aren't having our full blown Wild Rose Farm Spring Open House this year, but we are welcoming guests to see the ewes & lambs.
Drop a quick line if you'd like to come out on Saturday after noon!

Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest Animals!

Here are a couple of the animals that were at the Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest.  We were too late to get pictures of the Angora bunnies at the Sheep Thrills booth ..... they were sold before we got around to taking pictures!
Lippencott Alpacas - Just Sheared!
We got there just in time to see the shearing demonstration on this alpaca that Lena Galing is leading back to his pen.  The topknot is left on to shield the alpaca's eyes from the sun - sort of like a baseball cap - says Phil Galing of Lippencott Alpacas as he commented to the crowd during the demo.

Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest - Winners!

Admiring The Woven Rugs At All Strings Considered
The winner of the Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest "Best Fiber Booth Award" this year went to Birgitta Nostring of All Strings Considered from Meyersdale, PA.  The festival committee sends anonymous judges, usually young people - 4H members, Fair Royalty, etc. - to visit each booth.  They judge the booths on display, signage, labeling, and how the vendor relates to them and decribes their craft.  The vendors are usually surprised to hear that they've been judged and are very pleased to hear that they won.
All Strings Considered - Felted Hats & Colorful Shawl
The winner of the Best Craft Booth Award was Tustin Run Specialties of Brave, PA in Greene County.  The smell of their soaps & lotions filled the building!
There was a nice crowd at the festival enjoying the perfect weather, beautiful fiber and crafts, chef cooking demos,  and all of the other activities .... stay tuned for more pics & goodies.

Quick Lamb Update

More travel this week, but here's an update on what happened at Wild Rose Farm since the last post.  3 single ewe lambs and 1 single ram lamb all week.  Then this evening we found one of our x-bred ewes, #50, in the pasture with a set of twin ewe lambs!  WRF #109, a Dorset ewe who looked like she was also ready to lamb was brought up to the barn with #50 and her twins.  At 10PM, #109 had delivered a ewe lamb.  We'll go back out to the barn in  little while to check her progress.
Right now I'm working on completing the vendor list for the Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest  next weekend ...... the booth assignments are almost completed & we're adding another outdoor booth with Suri alpacas.  Yea!

Fiber Festival Crowd!

Lippencott Alpacas On Parade!
What would a fiber festival be if it didn't feature fiber animals?  This weekend at the  Waynesburg Sheep & Fiber Fest, we saw all kinds of fiber animals.  Most were sheep, but here we feature shots of nicely groomed attendees .......
